Snakehead Fishing in Kerala: Complete Guide for Indian Anglers

Snakehead Fishing in India — Know Your Target

Kerala is home to some of the best snakehead fishing in Asia. Dense backwaters, paddy field bunds, lotus-choked village ponds and slow jungle rivers — the habitat is perfect. And the fish are aggressive, powerful and built to fight.

Three snakehead species you'll encounter in Kerala:

Channa striata (Striped Snakehead / Varal — വരാൽ)

The most common snakehead in Kerala. Found in backwaters, paddy bunds, rivers and village ponds across the state. Aggressive surface striker — the primary target for frog lure fishing. Reaches 2–4kg in productive water bodies.

Channa marulius (Giant Snakehead / Viraal — വിരാൽ)

The trophy fish. Reaches 10kg+ in large rivers and reservoirs. Less common than striata but found in Periyar River, Bharathapuzha and large Kerala reservoirs. Requires heavier tackle — 30lb+ braid and 7ft heavy rod.

Channa diplogramma (Malabar Snakehead)

Endemic to the Western Ghats — found only in Kerala and Karnataka. Smaller than marulius, similar to striata. Excellent sport fish on light tackle in hill streams and tributary rivers.

All three species hit topwater lures aggressively — making snakehead fishing some of the most exciting freshwater fishing in India.

Best Lures for Snakehead Fishing in Kerala

Snakeheads are ambush predators — they respond to lures that imitate their natural prey. In Kerala waters, that means frogs, shrimp and small fish. Two lure types dominate:

Frog Lures — Best for Surface Fishing

Hollow body and soft rubber weedless frogs are the #1 lure for snakehead fishing in Kerala. Cast over lotus beds, hyacinth mats and paddy bunds. The walk-the-dog retrieve with 2–3 second pauses triggers explosive topwater strikes.

Best options: IZZAWA Frog Lure 4.5cm, Lucana Cheeto, Bravvo, Lures Factory frogs

Shrimp Lures — Best for Mid-Water and Bottom

Soft plastic shrimp lures work when snakeheads are holding in mid-water or near the bottom — especially in deeper backwater channels and estuaries. The Lucana Live Chemmeen with its built-in rattle is deadly in stained Kerala backwater where visibility is low.

Best options: Lucana Live Chemmeen 10cm, IZZAWA Shrimp Lure 13cm, Hunt House 16cm

Hard Lures — For Aggressive Fish

Crankbaits and minnows work when snakeheads are actively feeding near the surface. A slow-sinking minnow retrieved just below the surface edge of weed beds triggers reaction strikes.

Rule of thumb: Start with a frog lure early morning. Switch to shrimp lure mid-morning when surface activity drops.

Complete Snakehead Tackle Setup — Rod, Reel & Line

Snakehead Fishing Rod

For Channa striata (varal) in backwaters and paddy bunds:

IZZAWA Spinning Rod 7ft / IZZAWA Spinning Casting Rod 7ft 2pc — ₹1,300–₹1,400

Medium-heavy action, 7ft length gives casting distance to reach weed beds from the bank. Suitable for lures 10–30g and 15–30lb braid.

For trophy Channa marulius in rivers and reservoirs:

IZZAWA USA Pole Rod 10ft — ₹1,100 — extended reach for large open water, heavy line capacity.

Snakehead Fishing Reel

Spinning setup: IZZAWA Yumoshi SP 3000 — ₹1,199 — smooth drag, handles 20lb braid, good all-round choice for varal fishing.

Baitcasting setup: IZZAWA Camry 11BB 197g — ₹1,799 — preferred by experienced Kerala snakehead anglers for precision frog lure casting to tight spots.

Fishing Line

Proberos PE Braid 0.50mm 80LB — ₹340 — the ideal snakehead braid. Heavy enough to horse fish out of thick weed, sensitive enough to feel the strike. Use braid direct to frog lures — no leader needed for topwater. Add 25–30lb fluorocarbon leader (12 inch) for shrimp and bottom lures.

Complete budget setup under ₹3,000:

Rod ₹1,300 + Reel ₹1,199 + Line ₹340 = ₹2,839 total

Snakehead Fishing Techniques That Work in Kerala

Walk-the-Dog (Most Effective — Frog Lures)

Cast the frog to the far edge of the weed mat. Let it sit for 2 seconds. Then walk it side to side across the surface with short rod tip twitches. Pause for 3 seconds on the mat. Repeat. Most strikes happen during the pause — the frog sitting motionless on the mat is irresistible to a waiting snakehead.

Pop-and-Pause (Popping Frogs)

Cast to open pockets in weed beds. Short sharp pop with the rod tip, then pause. Snakeheads in open pockets respond to the disturbance. Work the lure slowly — do not rush the retrieve.

Hop-and-Drop (Shrimp Lures)

For deeper water and mid-morning fishing. Cast to weed edges, let the shrimp lure sink. Sharp upward rod lift to hop the lure, then let it fall back. Most strikes on the fall. Use 15–20lb braid with fluorocarbon leader.

Setting the Hook

Snakeheads explode on the lure from below and turn down immediately. Set the hook hard with a sharp rod sweep the moment you feel the strike. A soft hookset loses fish. With braid and a medium-heavy rod, a firm sweep is all you need.

Playing the Fish

Keep the rod tip high. Snakeheads will dive for the nearest weed bed immediately after the hook-up. Apply maximum side pressure to steer them away from cover — don't give them an inch toward the weeds.

Best Snakehead Fishing Spots in Kerala

Kuttanad Backwaters (Alappuzha District)

Kerala's most productive snakehead water. Thousands of kilometres of paddy bunds, flooded fields and narrow canals choked with hyacinth and lotus. Best access: hire a small country boat (vallam) to reach interior bunds. Varal up to 3kg caught regularly.

Vembanad Lake (Kottayam / Ernakulam)

Asia's longest lake — shallow weed beds along the eastern shore are classic snakehead habitat. Shore fishing possible at many points. Best early morning with frog lures along the lotus edge.

Periyar River (Ernakulam / Idukki)

Slower tributaries and oxbow pools hold large Channa marulius. The trophy fish water. Requires heavier tackle — 30lb braid, 7ft heavy rod. Best June–September when water levels rise.

Chalakudy River (Thrissur)

Clean river with excellent snakehead populations in the lower reaches. Rocky pools and weed patches produce fish year-round. Good access from several points in Thrissur district.

Village Ponds (Everywhere)

Don't overlook small village ponds (kuttakattu). Even 20x20 metre ponds can hold surprisingly large varal. Ask locally — Kerala anglers are generally happy to share spots. Fish early morning only, before heat.

Kodungallur Backwaters (Thrissur)

Local waters — excellent varal fishing in the narrow channels and bund edges around Kottapuram and Kodungallur. Productive year-round.

Best Season and Time for Snakehead Fishing in Kerala

Best Season: June to October (Post-Monsoon Peak)

The monsoon floods paddy fields and low-lying areas — snakeheads move into this flooded vegetation to feed and spawn. Post-monsoon (August–October) is the peak when fish are aggressive and found in shallow, newly flooded areas. Fish are easier to locate as water levels stabilise.

Second Season: February to April

Before the summer heat. Water levels drop, snakeheads concentrate in deeper pools and river bends. Less surface activity but productive with shrimp and bottom lures.

Avoid: May and early June — peak summer heat, low water, fish inactive and stressed.

Best Time of Day

Early morning (5:30am – 9am): Peak surface feeding. Use frog lures. Fish are in shallow water and aggressively surface feeding.

Evening (5pm – 7pm): Second feeding window. Less productive than morning but worth fishing on overcast days.

Midday: Avoid for surface fishing. Fish retreat to deep cover. Switch to shrimp lures at depth if you must fish midday.

Weather Tip

Overcast days extend the morning feeding window significantly — snakeheads feed longer at the surface when there's no direct sunlight. Post-rain mornings after a light overnight shower are among the most productive conditions.
